Trademark applications in the UAE are administered by the
Ministry of Economy – Trademark Office. The Registry
oversees the examination, publication, opposition, and registration
of trademarks across all seven Emirates. The UAE follows a
structured process involving both formal and substantive
examination, ensuring that only distinctive and law-compliant
marks proceed to registration.

The UAE trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.
The application is submitted through the MOEC online portal with the required details, including the trademark representation, applicant information, and the list of goods/services as per the NICE Classification. Once filed, the application receives an official filing number
The Registry conducts a formal examination to verify documents and filing accuracy, followed by a substantive examination to assess distinctiveness and compliance with UAE Trademark Law, including a search for conflicting prior trademarks. Marks that appear non-distinctive may still be accepted if supported by a foreign registration issued by a jurisdiction with a rigorous substantive examination system.
If the application clears examination without objections, the mark is formally accepted and, upon payment of publication fees, published in the UAE Trademark Journal for public review and potential opposition
Once published, third parties have a statutory 30-day period to file an opposition. If no opposition is filed, or if any opposition is successfully resolved in favor of the applicant, the application proceeds to the registration stage.
After payment of the registration fee, the Registry issues the official Trademark Registration Certificate on the same day
The protection is granted for a term of ten years, with the option to renew indefinitely in successive ten-year periods by paying the prescribed renewal fees.
