Trademark Registration in Qatar - Protect Your Brand Nationwide

Trademark applications in Qatar are administered by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) – Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department. The Registry is responsible for examining, publishing, managing oppositions, and registering trademarks across the State of Qatar. To register a trademark in Qatar, certain pre-filing requirements must be met. The trademark must be distinctive and not deceptively similar to any existing registered trademarks. Qatar prohibits trademark registration for goods and services that contradict Islamic principles or public order, including alcoholic products, pork-related goods, and other items deemed morally or culturally inappropriate by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Why Trademark Registration in the Qatar Is Important for Brand Protection?

Legal Protection : Grants you exclusive rights to use your mark in Qatar, preventing others from using confusingly similar marks for similar goods/services.

Prevents Misuse: Protects against false advertising, imitation, and harassment from larger corporations

Builds Brand Value & Trust: Enhances your brand's credibility, recognition, and reputation with consumers, signaling authenticity.

How the Qatar Trademark Registration Works

The Qatar  trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.

1

Filing

To file a trademark in Qatar, you must submit the application form electronically through the MOCI’s online portal. It is possible to file new trademark applications and obtain official filing certificates revealing filing number and date without copies or originals of the required documents. The application must specify the goods or services under the Nice Classification System for which the trademark is to be registered.

2

Examination

Formal Examination of the application takes place within 10-15 days from filing date. After the formal Examination the TM office will issue an official notification to submit the required document within 30 days from the date of notification at no cost, extendable for one time of 30 days from expiry of the first 30 days period, followed by Substantive Examination which will evaluate the distinctiveness of the mark and checks for conflicts with prior registered or pending marks

3

Acceptance & Publication

If the application passes examination with no refusals, MOCI officially accepts it and the Applicant must pay publication fees. The mark is then published in the Official Gazette/Trademarks Bulletin for public inspection.

4

Opposition Period

Once published, any third party may file opposition. The statutory opposition period is 60 days from the date of publication. If opposition is filed, procedures follow as per rules-objections, hearings, resolution. If no opposition or opposition resolved in favour of applicant, proceed to registration.

5

Registration

After payment of the registration fee, the Registry issues the official Trademark Registration Certificate on the same day.

6

Validity&Renewal

The protection is granted for a term of ten years, with the option to renew indefinitely in successive ten-year periods by paying the prescribed renewal fees.
