Trademark Registration in Uganda - Protect Your Brand Nationwide

Trademark matters in Uganda are administered by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) under the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. URSB is responsible for the filing, examination, publication, opposition, and registration of trademarks in Uganda. The trademark system follows a first-to-file principle and includes formality examination, substantive examination, publication in the Official Gazette, opposition proceedings, and final registration. Foreign applicants are required to file trademark applications through a locally appointed Ugandan trademark agent.

Why Trademark Registration in the Uganda Is Important for Brand Protection?

Exclusive Rights: Grants you exclusive legal ownership and control over your trademark for the registered goods/services throughout Uganda.

Legal Enforcement: Enables you to take action against infringement, counterfeiting, and unauthorized use through the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and Ugandan courts.

How the Uganda Trademark Registration Works

1

Filing

Trademark applications are filed with URSB through an authorized local trademark agent. The application includes applicant particulars, representation of the mark, and specification of goods/services under the Nice Classification. An application number is issued upon filing.

2

Examination

URSB conducts a formal and substantive examination to assess registrability, including distinctiveness and compliance with Ugandan trademark law.

3

Publication

If accepted, the trademark application is published in the Uganda Gazette.

4

Opposition Period

Third parties may file an opposition within 60 days from the date of publication.

5

Registration

If no opposition is filed, or if opposition proceedings are resolved in favor of the applicant, the trademark proceeds to registration and a certificate is issued.

6

Validity & Renewal

Ugandan trademarks are protected for 7 years from the date of registration and may be renewed indefinitely for successive 10-year terms upon payment of renewal fees.
