Trademark Registration in Bahrain - Protect Your Brand Nationwide

Trademark applications in Bahrain are administered by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MOIC) -Industrial Property Directorate. The Registry handles the examination, publication, opposition, and registration of trademarks across the Kingdom of Bahrain. Bahrain is a member of the Paris Convention and the Nice Classification system, and it is also part of the Hague Apostille Convention, allowing applicants to submit apostilled Powers of Attorney instead of requiring full embassy legalization.

How the Bahrain Trademark Registration Works?

Exclusive Rights: Grants you exclusive legal ownership and control over your trademark for the registered goods/services throughout Bahrain.

Legal Enforcement: Enables you to take action against infringement, counterfeiting, and unauthorized use through the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Bahraini courts.

Nationwide Protection: Secures trademark protection across the entire Kingdom of Bahrain.

Market Positioning: Strengthens brand identity, builds consumer trust, and enhances competitive advantage in Bahrain’s business-friendly market.

Why Trademark Registration in the Bahrain Is Important for Brand Protection?

The Bahrain trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.

1

Filing

Applications are filed electronically through the MOIC online portal. The applicant must specify the goods/services under the Nice Classification. Bahrain accepts apostilled POAs, which simplifies submission for foreign applicants.

2

Examination

Applications undergo Formal Examination to check on correctness of documents, classification, applicant data and a Substantive Examination for distinctiveness assessment, compliance with law, and conflict check with earlier marks. If objections arise, an office action will be issued, typically allowing 30 days for response.

3

Acceptance & Publication

Where the decision of the Trademark Office is to accept the mark for registration, registry will sent a notification of acceptance either in writing or electronically. The notification will confirm the acceptance of the mark for registration and the requirement to pay a ‘publication fee’ within 30 days of the notification of acceptance. Failure to pay the fee within this period will result in the application being deemed abandoned. Publication is in the official ‘bulletin’ on the Ministry of Industry and Commerce website for public inspection.

4

5. Opposition Period

Once published, any third party may file an opposition within 60 days from the publication date. The opposition is made to the Grievances and Opposition Section If no opposition is filed or if opposition is decided in favor of the applicant the mark proceeds to registration

5

6. Registration

After payment of the registration fee, the Registry issues the official Trademark Registration Certificate.

6

Validity & Renewal

The protection is granted for a term of ten years, with the option to renew indefinitely in successive ten-year periods by paying the prescribed renewal fees.
