Until 11 November 2026:
The Maldives had no formal trademark registry. Protection was based on publishing Trademark Cautionary Notices in newspapers, which served as public claims of ownership but did not provide statutory enforcement rights.
From 11 November 2026:
The new Trademark Act (Law No. 19/2025) introduces a formal trademark registration system, replacing cautionary notices.
Additionally, the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act (Act No. 13/2025) (effective 1 January 2026) establishes the Maldives Intellectual Property Office (MIPO) to administer and enforce IP rights.

Filing
The application with MIPO, including applicant details, trademark representation, and goods/services classification
Examination
The MIPO examination on formal and substantive grounds to verify compliance and assess registrability
Acceptance & Publication
The accepted trademark is Published in the Official Gazette for third party review
Opposition Period
The opposition period will be confirmed after the system become fully operational. During this period third parties may challenge the application
Registration
Registration and issuance of the Trademark Registration Certificate if no opposition is filed or if opposition is resolved in favor of the applicant.
Validity & Renewal
Trademark validity: 10 years from registration date and Renewable indefinitely for successive 10-year periods
