Trademarks in Malaysia are governed by the Trade Marks Act 2019 and administered by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) under the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living. How the Malaysia Trademark Registration Works
The Malaysia trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.
Filing
The application is filed electronically (via IP Online) or manually to MyIPO containing the mark, applicant details, specification of goods/services.
Examination
MyIPO conducts formal and substantive examination, usually within 6–9 months. Any objections must be addressed within the prescribed time.
Acceptance & Publication
If accepted by the Registrar, the trademark is published in the official Trade and Service Marks Journal. This initiates the opposition period.
Opposition Period
A 2-month opposition period starts from publication, during which third parties may file an opposition. If no opposition is filed, the application proceeds further.
Registration
If there is no opposition, and the opposition period passes, then the the trademark proceeds to registration and MyIPO issues a Registration Certificate.
Validity & Renewal
Validity & Renewal A Trade mark registration is valid for ten years from the date of application and may be renewed every ten years upon payment of renewal fees filed within six months before expiry. Trademark in Malaysia are subject to revocation if the mark has not been used in 3 consecutive years and of there’s no valid reason for non use.

Requirements for Filing
Name, address and nationality of the Applicant;
Class and list of goods and services (full class heading of the International Classification of Goods is not allowed);
Soft copy of the trademark, and an indication of whether the filing of the mark is to be in black & white or colour;
A certified copy of the Certificate of Incorporation.
Priority details (if claiming);
Translation and transliteration of the mark (if the mark is in a language other than English, Malay or does not comprise of Roman characters).
