DGIP is responsible for the examination, publication, opposition, and registration of trademarks in Indonesia. The system follows a first-to-file principle and includes formal examination, substantive examination, publication, and registration. Foreign applicants are required to file through a locally registered Indonesian IP agent.

Trademark applications are filed with DGIP through a licensed Indonesian IP agent. The application includes applicant details, representation of the mark, and specification of goods/services under the Nice Classification. An application number is issued upon filing.
DGIP conducts a formality examination to verify compliance with filing requirements and classification.
If the application passes formal examination, it is published in the Official Trademark Gazette.
Third parties may file an opposition within 2 months from the date of publication.
If no opposition is filed, or if opposition is resolved in favor of the applicant, DGIP issues the Trademark Registration Certificate
Indonesian trademarks are protected for 10 years from the filing date and may be renewed indefinitely for successive 10-year terms.
