Why Trademark Registration in the Cyprus Is Important for Brand Protection?
The Cyprus trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.
Filing
Trademark applications are filed either electronically through the Registry’s e-filing system or by submitting the application directly to the office with details of the applicant, representation of the mark, and the list of goods/services under the Nice Classification.
Examination
The Registry conducts a formal examination to verify compliance with filing requirements, followed by substantive examination to assess distinctiveness, legality, and possible conflicts with earlier trademarks. If objections arise, the applicant is given an opportunity to respond.
Acceptance & Publication
If the trademark satisfies the legal requirements, the application is accepted and published on the official website / bulletin of the Registry for public notice.
Opposition Period
Following publication, third parties may file an opposition against the trademark application within three months from the date of publication.
Registration
If no opposition is filed, or if opposition proceedings are resolved in favor of the applicant, the Registrar proceeds with the registration of the trademark and issues the official registration certificate.
