Trademark Registration in Zimbabwe- Protect Your Brand Nationwide

Trademarks in Zimbabwe are administered by the Deeds, Companies & Intellectual Property Office (DCIP), specifically the Intellectual Property (IP) Division (commonly referred to as the Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Office or ZIPO). Zimbabwe is a member of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the Paris Convention. ZIPO conducts both formal and substantive examination, including examination for absolute grounds (distinctiveness, legality, public order) and relative grounds (conflicts with earlier registered trademarks).

Why Trademark Registration in the Zimbabwe Is Important for Brand Protection?

Exclusive Rights: Grants you exclusive legal ownership and control over your trademark for the registered goods/services throughout Zimbabwe.

Legal Enforcement: Enables you to take action against infringement, counterfeiting, and unauthorized use through the Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Office (ZIPO) and Zimbabwean courts.

Nationwide Protection: Secures trademark protection across all regions of Zimbabwe, regardless of where the business operates.

Regional Protection Advantage: Zimbabwe is a member of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), allowing broader regional protection through a single application covering multiple member countries.

Trademark Registration Procedure in Zimbabwe

Here is the step-by-step process followed for trademark registration in Zimbabwe.

1

Filing

Trademark applications are filed with ZIPO either electronically or physically. An application number and filing date are issued upon submission

2

Examination

ZIPO conducts formal and substantive examination. If objections arise, ZIPO issues an Examination Report, which must be responded to within the prescribed time limit.

3

Acceptance & Publication

If the application meets all legal requirements, it is accepted and published in the Zimbabwe Intellectual Property Office Journal / Government Gazette.

4

Opposition Period

Following publication, third parties may file an opposition within 2 months from the publication date. Opposition proceedings are conducted before ZIPO.

5

Registration

If no opposition is filed, or if opposition proceedings are resolved in favour of the applicant, the trademark is entered into the register and a Certificate of Registration is issued

6

Validity & Renewal

A Zimbabwe trademark is valid for 10 years from the filing date and renewable indefinitely for successive 10-year periods. Renewal must be filed before expiry or within the statutory grace period with surcharge.
