Trademark registration process in Greece
Here is how to register a trademark in Greece, step by step.
Search and classify
We search the register and map your goods and services to the Nice classes.
File electronically with OBI
We file the declaration with the mark, the applicant’s details, the classified list of goods or services and the agent for service, and pay the fee by card. The filing date is the date the declaration is submitted.
Formal check (30 days to correct)
If the application has formal defects, the examiner invites you to correct them within 30 days of notification; otherwise the file is archived. The filing date stands if you correct in time.
Examination
The examiner checks the absolute grounds for refusal and searches for earlier marks, notifying their owners so they can oppose. A refusal can be appealed within 60 days.
Publication and opposition (3 months)
The decision accepting the application is published, and an opposition may be filed within 3 months of the day after publication.
Registration
If no opposition is filed, or it is rejected, the mark is entered in the trademark register. Protection runs for 10 years from the filing date.
Start your application in a few minutes. Nothing is filed until you approve the written quote.

Timeline, validity and renewal
The national procedures register estimates about one month for processing an electronic filing, followed by a 3-month opposition window once the acceptance is published. Protection starts on the filing date and ends ten years later; it can be renewed every ten years. OBI notifies the owner at least six months before expiry. The renewal fee is paid in the last six months of protection, or within six further months after expiry with the fee increased by half.
Trademark law and IP office in Greece
Trademarks in Greece are governed by Law 4679/2020, which implements EU Directive 2015/2436. The Trademarks Directorate of the Industrial Property Organisation (OBI), supervised by the Ministry of Development, examines and registers marks. The Trademarks Administrative Committee hears oppositions, appeals and cancellation requests, and its decisions can be challenged before the administrative courts. Greece has been a member of the Paris Convention since 2 October 1924 and the Madrid Protocol since 10 August 2000.
Use requirements and non-use revocation
Under Law 4679/2020, the owner loses the rights, in whole or in part, if within five years of registration the mark is not put to genuine use for the registered goods or services, or if use is suspended for five continuous years. Revocation can be requested from the Trademarks Directorate or raised as a counterclaim in infringement proceedings. Keep dated invoices, packaging, advertising and distributor agreements that show the mark in use.
Opposition, objections and appeals
Formal defects
The examiner invites you to correct defects within 30 days of notification. If you comply in time, the original filing date stands; otherwise the file is archived.
Refusal
A decision refusing the application in whole or in part can be appealed to the Trademarks Administrative Committee within 60 full days of notification.
Opposition
An opposition against the decision accepting an application can be filed within 3 months of the day after its publication. The official fee is €70, plus a €40 hearing fee.
Appeals
Decisions of the Trademarks Administrative Committee can be challenged before the administrative courts.
Trademark enforcement and infringement in Greece
A registered trademark gives you an exclusive right to prevent unauthorised use of identical or similar signs for the goods and services it covers. Law 4679/2020 also implements EU Directive 2004/48 on the enforcement of intellectual property rights.
Your enforcement options
- Cease-and-desist letter: often the most practical first step.
- Infringement action: bring civil proceedings for infringement before the courts.
- Opposition and cancellation: oppose conflicting applications, or ask the Trademarks Directorate to declare a registration invalid or revoked.
- Online takedowns: remove infringing listings on marketplaces and social media.
