How the Pakistan Trademark Registration Works?

The Pakistan trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.

1

Filing

The trademark application is filed with IPO-Pakistan, containing the applicant details, representation of the trademark, list of goods/ services under the nice classification. Once filed, an official application number and filing date are allotted.

2

Examination

IPO-Pakistan conducts both formal and substantive examination. If objections are raised, the response must be filed within the prescribed time.

3

Acceptance & Publication

If the application clears examination without objections, the mark is published in the Trademarks Journal for opposition.

4

Opposition Period

After publication, third parties are granted a 2 month statutory period to file an opposition. If no opposition is filed, or if opposition is resolved in favour of the applicant, the mark proceeds to registration.

5

Registration

Upon completion of all formalities, and upon the payment of the registration fee, the IPO-Pakistan issues the Trademark Registration Certificate, granting exclusive rights over the mark across Pakistan.

6

Validity & Renewal

A registered trademark in Pakistan is valid for 10 years from the filing date and may be renewed indefinitely for successive 10-year periods upon payment of renewal fees
