Trademark Registration in Uzbekistan- Protect Your Brand Nationwide

Trademark protection in Uzbekistan is governed by the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Trademarks, Service Marks and Appellations of Origin of Goods and administered by the Intellectual Property Agency (IPA) under the Ministry of Justice. Uzbekistan follows a first-to-file system, and trademark rights arise only upon registration.

IPA conducts formal and substantive examination, including examination for absolute grounds (distinctiveness, descriptiveness, public order) and relative grounds (conflicts with earlier registered or pending trademarks).

Why Trademark Registration in the Uzbekistan Is Important for Brand Protection?

Exclusive Rights: Grants you exclusive legal ownership and control over your trademark for the registered goods/services throughout Uzbekistan.

Legal Enforcement: Enables you to take action against infringement, counterfeiting, and unauthorized use through the Agency on Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Justice and Uzbek courts.

Nationwide Protection: Secures trademark protection across the entire territory of Uzbekistan.

Market Positioning: Strengthens brand identity, builds consumer trust, and enhances competitive advantage in Uzbekistan’s growing market.

How the Uzbekistan Trademark Registration Works

The Uzbekistan trademark registration system follows a structured sequence of reviews, publications, and legal checks. These steps ensure that trademarks meet all statutory requirements and remain protected over time.

1

Filing

Trademark applications are filed with the Intellectual Property Agency (IPA) either electronically or in paper form. An application number and filing date are issued upon submission.

2

Examination

IPA conducts a formal and substantive examination and office actions may be issued and must be responded to within statutory time limits.

3

Acceptance & Publication

If the application passes examination, it is published in the Official Bulletin of the Intellectual Property Agency of Uzbekistan, enabling third-party review.

4

Opposition Period

Third parties may file objections or oppositions within the statutory period following publication. Opposition proceedings are handled by IPA.

5

Registration

If no opposition is filed, or if opposition proceedings are resolved in favour of the applicant, IPA issues a decision to register the trademark and a Certificate of Registration is granted upon payment of registration fees.

6

Validity & Renewal

A trademark in Uzbekistan is valid for 10 years from the filing date and renewable indefinitely for successive 10-year periods. Renewal must be filed before expiry or within the statutory grace period with surcharge.
