Trademark Registration in Belize (BZ): Protect Your Brand with BELIPO
Trademark registration in Belize gives you the exclusive right to use your brand across the country. Applications are filed with the Belize Intellectual Property Office (BELIPO) under the Trade Marks Act, Chapter 257 of the Laws of Belize. Belize follows a registration-based system with English as the filing language, so the first applicant usually wins. Our trademark consultants handle search, filing and follow-up for businesses in Belize City, Belmopan, San Pedro and abroad.

Introduction
The country has maintained a modern intellectual property framework since the early 2000. Belize's trademark laws are codified in the Trade Marks Act, Chapter 257, Revised Edition 2000, which is based on UK law, and the Trade Marks Rules for procedural aspects. Belize is a member of the Paris Convention and the World Trade Organization (WTO), applying the TRIPS Agreement. Trademark registration is essential for any business operating in or exporting to Belize.
Critically, Belize operates its own national trademark registration system. Belize acceded to the Madrid Protocol on 24 November 2022, and the Madrid Protocol officially entered into force on 24 February 2023, making Belize the 113th member of the Madrid System. Belize is also a member of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (since 2000). This means trademarks may be filed directly with the national office or through the Madrid System designating Belize.
Why register your trademark in Belize
A gateway to Central America and the Caribbean.
Belize sits between Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean. Brands using it as a regional base need local protection first.
No regional trademark covers Belize.
There is no CARICOM or Central American trademark. A US, Mexican or other national registration gives no rights in Belize.
First to file wins.
The first applicant generally gets the registered right. A local distributor or competitor can register your brand before you arrive.
Tourism, trade and company formation.
Hotels, resorts, consumer goods and internationally owned Belize companies all rely on strong brand protection. A registration supports licensing, franchising and enforcement.

Trademark registration process in Belize
Here is how to register a trademark in Belize, step by step.
Search and classify (1–3 days)
We search the BELIPO register for identical and similar marks. We map your goods and services to the correct Nice classes, up to 5 per application.
File with BELIPO (same day)
We file the application with the mark image, specification, Authorisation of Agent (Form No. 2) and Address for Service (Form No. 1). You receive a filing number and date.
Examination (about 2 months)
BELIPO checks formalities, distinctiveness and conflicts with earlier marks, then accepts the mark or issues an examination report.
Reply to objections, if any
If BELIPO objects, we reply with arguments or an amended specification.
Publication and opposition (12 weeks)
Accepted marks are published in three consecutive fortnightly issues of the Intellectual Property Journal. Third parties may oppose within 12 weeks of the first publication.
Registration and certificate (8–12 months from filing)
With no opposition, the mark is registered and the certificate issued. Registration is backdated to the filing date, and protection runs for 10 years from that date.
Start your application in a few minutes. Nothing is filed until you approve the written quote.
Documents required for trademark registration in Belize
Authorisation of Agent (Form No. 2), signed and notarised
Address for Service in Belize (Form No. 1), which our local agent provides
Applicant’s full name, address, nationality and legal form
Clear image of the mark in JPG format (for logos)
List of goods or services, up to 5 classes per application
Priority document, if you claim Paris Convention priority within 6 months of a first filing abroad
Power of attorney requirements for foreign applicants in Belize
Foreign applicants in Belize need a notarised power of attorney. BELIPO calls it the Authorisation of Agent (Form No. 2), appointing a local Belizean attorney. A simple signature is not enough. An apostille or legalisation is generally not required, unless the document is notarised outside the Commonwealth or is not in English. Applicants based outside Belize must also file an Address for Service in Belize (Form No. 1), which our local agent provides. We send ready-to-sign forms the same day you instruct us.
Trademark registration fees in Belize
BELIPO’s official application fee covers filing, publication and registration for one class, with a fee for each extra class. One application can cover up to 5 classes; for more, file a second application.

| Application fee (includes 1 class) | 475 | 237.50 |

Timeline, validity and renewal
How long registration takes
A straightforward application takes 8–12 months from filing to certificate. BELIPO’s service target is about 2 months to accept the application or issue a first examination report. Objections or oppositions add time. Registration is backdated to the filing date and lasts 10 years from that date (sections 18(3) and 20(1) of the Act). It can be renewed for further 10-year periods. A late renewal is possible within 6 months after expiry at a higher fee. After that the mark is removed, but it can be restored by re-registration within 12 months of the expiry date.
Validity and renewal
Indefinitely renewable for successive 10-year periods. Renewal applications can be made within 1 year before expiry and are subject to payment of the prescribed renewal fee. A grace period of 6 months is available for late renewal, with payment of a surcharge.
Governing Law
Legal Framework
Trademark protection in Belize is governed by:
• Trade Marks Act, 2000 — the primary legislation governing trademarks, which is based on UK law.
• Trade Marks Rules — the implementing regulations that detail procedural requirements.
• Trade Marks (Madrid Protocol) Regulations 2023 — the implementing regulations for the Madrid Protocol, which entered into force on 24 February 2023.
The legal framework is TRIPS-compliant and aligns with international standards through treaties such as the Paris Convention and the Madrid Protocol.
Competent Authority
Trademark applications are filed with the Belize Intellectual Property Office (BELIPO), which operates under the Registrar General's Department. BELIPO handles all aspects of trademark examination, registration, opposition, and record maintenance. Applications may be filed online through the BELIPO website or in paper form at the BELIPO office.
Belize is a member of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Madrid Protocol (since 24 February 2023), and the World Trade Organization (WTO), applying the TRIPS Agreement. Belize is not a member of the Nice Agreement but applies the Nice Classification in practice.
Trademark law and IP office in Belize
Trademarks in Belize are governed by the Trade Marks Act (Chapter 257 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020), in force since 2000, the Trade Marks Rules (Chapter 257S) and the Trade Marks (General Procedures) Administrative Instructions, 2005. The Belize Intellectual Property Office (BELIPO) examines and registers marks. Accepted marks are published in the Intellectual Property Journal. Belize is a member of the Paris Convention and, since 24 February 2023, the Madrid System. Unregistered marks may be protected through a passing-off action under common law, but registration is far easier to enforce. Appeals against BELIPO decisions go to the Supreme Court of Belize.
Use requirements and non-use cancellation
You do not need to use a mark before filing in Belize. After registration, a mark can be revoked if it has not been genuinely used in Belize within five years of registration, or if use stops for an uninterrupted five-year period without proper reasons. Keep dated invoices, packaging, advertising and online listings that show the mark in use in Belize.
Opposition, objections and appeals
Office objections.
If BELIPO refuses or requests changes, you reply within the deadline in the examination report x months with arguments or an amended specification.
Opposition.
Any person can oppose a published mark within 12 weeks of its first publication in the Intellectual Property Journal. The applicant files a counter-statement, both sides file evidence, and BELIPO decides.
Appeals.
A refusal or opposition decision can be appealed to the Supreme Court of Belize within x days of the decision.
Trademark enforcement and infringement in Belize
A registered trademark gives you the legal standing to stop copycats in Belize. Without registration, you must rely on a passing-off claim and prove your reputation first.
What counts as infringement.
Using an identical or similar mark for the same or similar goods or services, selling counterfeit products, or importing goods bearing your mark without consent.
Your enforcement options
- Cease-and-desist letter: often the fastest way to stop a local infringer.
- Civil action: claim an injunction, damages or an account of profits, and delivery up of goods before the Supreme Court of Belize.
- Criminal penalties: counterfeiting and false trade marking can lead to fines and imprisonment.
- Customs measures: record your mark with the Belize Customs and Excise Department to detain counterfeit imports.
- Online takedowns: remove infringing listings on marketplaces and social media.
Defending your registration.
Watch published marks and oppose conflicting applications within the 12-week window.

What to know before filing in Belize
No regional shortcut.
A US, Mexican or CARICOM-country registration does not protect you in Belize.
Notarise the power of attorney.
BELIPO requires a notarised Authorisation of Agent; a simple signature is not enough. An apostille is generally needed only if it is notarised outside the Commonwealth or not in English.
Spanish-speaking customers.
Many Belizeans speak Spanish; consider filing a Spanish version of your mark if you use one.
Up to 5 classes per application.
Group related classes to save on filing fees.
File before you appoint a distributor.
Register before signing with a local distributor, franchisee or hotel partner.
