Trademark Registration in Finland - Protect Your Brand Across the EU

Trademark matters in Finland are administered by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH). The Office is responsible for the filing, examination, publication, opposition, and registration of trademarks. The system follows a first-to-file principle and includes both formal and substantive examination. As a member of the European Union, applicants may also obtain trademark protection through the EU trademark system alongside national registration.

Introduction

Finland is a highly developed Nordic economy known for its innovation, technology, and strong rule of law. With a robust business environment and integration into the European Union market, it offers excellent opportunities for international businesses. Securing trademark protection in Finland supports brand establishment in a stable and innovation-driven market, as well as broader EU expansion.

Why Trademark Registration in Finland Is Important for Brand Protection?

Exclusive Rights: Grants you exclusive legal ownership and control over your trademark for the registered goods/services throughout Finland.

Legal Enforcement: Enables you to take action against infringement, counterfeiting, and unauthorized use through the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) and relevant courts.

Nationwide Protection: Secures trademark protection across the entire territory of Finland.

Regional Protection Advantage: As a member of the European Union, Finland allows access to EU-wide trademark protection through the EU Trademark (EUTM) system, covering all EU member states under a single registration.

Trademark Registration Procedure in Finland

Here is the step-by-step process followed for trademark registration in Finland

1

Filing

Applications are filed electronically via the PRH's online service. A filing date and application number are issued once the fee is paid and the form is accepted.

2

Examination

PRH examines formal and substantive requirements, including distinctiveness and compliance with law. If problems arise, an office action may be issued.

3

Acceptance & Publication

If approved, the mark is entered in the Finnish Trademark Register and published in the Trademark Gazette.

4

Opposition Period

Once published, third parties may file an opposition within 2 months of publication if they believe their earlier rights would be infringed

5

Registration

If no opposition is filed, or if any opposition is unsuccessful, PRH proceeds to register the trademark and issues a Registration Certificate.

6

Validity & Renewal

A registered Finnish trademark is valid for 10 years from the filing date. It can be renewed indefinitely for further 10-year terms by paying the renewal fee. Renewal may be filed within 12 months before expiry or within a 6-month grace period after expiry with a surcharge.

Governing Law

Trademark protection in Finland is governed by the Trademarks Act and aligned with European Union trademark directives and regulations. The Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH) is the competent authority responsible for trademark administration and registration.
