Oman

The Sultanate of Oman has taken a decisive step to tighten brand protection.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) has issued a formal notice calling on all individuals and businesses currently using unregistered trademarks to complete the Oman trademark registration process through the Ministry or its affiliated directorates.

For brand owners operating in or entering the Omani market, this is more than a regulatory reminder  it is a clear signal that protecting your brand is no longer optional. It is a business necessity.

What the MoCIIP Notice Says

In its announcement, MoCIIP urged every individual and business relying on an unregistered mark to formalise their rights by registering through the Ministry or its affiliated directorates. The move reflects Oman’s continued commitment to:

  • Strengthening intellectual property protection across the Sultanate
  • Promoting fair competition between businesses
  • Creating a more secure and transparent commercial environment

The notice places the responsibility squarely on brand owners: if your mark is in use but not yet registered, the window to act is now.

Why Trademark Registration in Oman Matters

Trademark registration is far more than a legal formality. A registered mark is a commercial asset that works for your business every day. Registering your trademark in Oman helps you:
• Protect your brand identity and reputation against imitation and misuse
• Secure exclusive rights to use your mark across your registered classes
• Reduce the risk of disputes and infringement claims before they arise
• Strengthen your market presence and business value, including for franchising, licensing, and investment
An unregistered mark, by contrast, leaves your brand exposed. Without registration, enforcing your rights against copycats becomes slower, costlier, and far less certain.

The Cost of Waiting

Many businesses delay registration until a problem appears a competitor adopting a similar name, a counterfeit product, or a dispute over ownership. By then, the legal position is often weaker and the remedies more limited. Oman’s first-to-file framework rewards those who act early; registering proactively is almost always cheaper than litigating reactively.
The MoCIIP notice effectively removes any excuse for delay. With the Ministry actively encouraging compliance, brand owners who register now position themselves on the right side of a strengthening IP regime.
