Introduction
Cameroon, through its membership in OAPI, offers a centralized and efficient system for trademark protection across multiple African jurisdictions. By filing a single application, businesses can secure rights in 17 member states, making it a strategic route for brand expansion in Francophone Africa. The streamlined procedure and uniform legal framework enhance consistency and reduce administrative complexity.
Why Trademark Registration in the Cameroon Is Important ?

Trademark Registration Procedure in Cameroon
Trademark Registration Procedure in Cameroon
Filing
Trademark applications are filed with OAPI through an authorized local agent. The application must include applicant details, a clear representation of the mark, and a list of goods/services classified under the Nice Classification. A filing date and application number are assigned upon submission.
Examination
OAPI conducts a formal examination of the application. Substantive examination is limited, as the system largely relies on opposition by third parties.
Publication
If accepted, the trademark application is published in the Official Gazette.
Opposition Period
Third parties may file an opposition within 6 months from the date of publication.
Registration
If no opposition is filed, or if opposition proceedings are resolved in favor of the applicant, the trademark is registered and a certificate is issued.
Governing Law
Trademark protection in Cameroon is governed by the Bangui Agreement (as revised). The African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI) is the competent authority responsible for the administration, examination, and registration of trademarks for all member states, including Cameroon.
